Assessments
The state assessment is designed to help schools and districts determine whether students have met the K-12 Writing Learning Standards.
Assessing Writing in Grades 4 and 7:
Measurements of Student Progress (MSP)
Grade 4 Writing assessment (PDF) consists of two prompts: a narrative prompt and an expository prompt. Each prompt consists of two strands: Content, Organization and Style (COS) and Conventions (CONV). Together, the total for Writing is 12 points.
Grade 7 Writing assessment (PDF) consists of two prompts: an expository prompt and a persuasive prompt. Each prompt consists of two strands: Content, Organization and Style (COS) and Conventions (CONV). Together, the total for Writing is 12 points.
Assessing Writing in High School:
High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE)
The high school Writing assessment (PDF) consists of two prompts: an expository prompt and a persuasive prompt. Each prompt consists of two strands: Content, Organization and Style (COS) and Conventions (CONV). The high school Writing assessment is double scored, for a total of 24 points.
